Backdrop Portraits

In 2011, as well as documenting music making at the Dartington International Summer School, I joined forces with my co-photographer that year, Alice Carfrae, to frame musicians and composers in front of a portable backdrop. Irving Penn was an obvious influence. In our case, part of the impulse was to isolate our subjects within the idyllic English garden landscape.

Composers Mira Calix and Tansy Davies: Mira Calix is a South African born British-based artist signed to Warp Records. Her earlier music is almost exclusively electronic but in recent years she has incorporated classical instrumentation. Tansy Davies is an English composer of contemporary classical music. The composition for this photograph gives a nod to the Irving Penn photograph of Max Ernst and his wife Dorothea Tanning.

The English composer Philip Cashian is head of composition at the Royal Academy of Music.

Steven Devine is harpsichordist with London Baroque and Co-Principal keyboard player with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Richard Baker is a British composer and conductor. He studied in the Hague under Louis Andriessen.

The Askew Sisters, Emily and Hazel, are folk musicians who sing traditional ballads and play dance tunes on fiddle, melodeon and concertina.
